Hey, I'm Thanh!
I’m a Vietnamese artist now based in the U.S., and my passion lies in blending my love for food with watercolor art. My food designs have gained quite a following, transforming recipes into beautiful watercolor masterpieces. What started as a hobby during the pandemic soon turned into a flourishing creative career. With extra time at home, I found joy in drawing, which led to significant growth on social media. I truly value the flexibility and freedom in my work, and I’ve been drawn to watercolor for its simplicity and minimal investment. Through my art, I aim to tell stories with intricate details, celebrating the rich culinary culture of Vietnam that means so much to me.
Vietnam has a deep food heritage, where gastronomy is an integral part of everyday life. During the pandemic, as many people returned to cooking at home and rediscovered traditional recipes, I channeled this shift into my art, creating detailed recipe cards that honor these culinary traditions. My watercolor illustrations often focus on the ingredients themselves, reflecting my admiration for those who cook and create. The scarcity of certain ingredients during the pandemic made many of us more mindful of food's value, something I strive to capture in my work. Lately, I’ve been emphasizing ingredient illustration, highlighting the preciousness of food and the love involved in preparing it.
What resonates most with my audience is the personal touch I add, especially with my handwritten notes, which have become a signature element of my brand. I take great pride in creating meaningful recipe cards that combine watercolor illustrations with handwritten stories. My work not only helps preserve cherished family traditions but also underscores the importance of food during challenging times like the pandemic.

The Topics We Cover
Basics of Sketching Food
You’ll learn how every food item starts with a simple shape underneath all the texture and details. By understanding these basic forms, you can quickly sketch any dish from the ground up and refine it layer by layer. When you’re confident in your sketching, your artwork is already halfway to being mouth‑watering!
Basics of Mixing Watercolor
This section covers essential watercolor techniques tailored to painting food, showing you how to mix colors with confidence, create realistic textures using simple brush strokes, read and build color charts, and design natural food color palettes. By the end, you’ll have a solid foundation for creating juicy, appetizing watercolor food paintings.
Painting Brownie Fudge
To start our first project, we will apply the geometric food sketching technique to the creation of brownies. Using watercolor techniques, we will create a cakey texture for the brownies and a crispy golden brown texture for the top. By the end of this chapter, you will know how to paint cakey textures for a variety of desserts.
Painting Cream Doughnuts
In this chapter, we will apply sketching theory and watercolor techniques to draw Cream Donuts. We will focus on sketching and creating a crusty and airy bread texture for a spherical cream donut. After this project, you can apply the same techniques to other foods that have the same shape and texture such as bread buns and paparoti.
Painting a Cheesecake with Cherry Sauce
In this chapter, we will combine the cheesecake cylinder sketch with the spherical sauce above. You will learn how to apply glossy texture to the sauce and crumbly texture to the cheesecake crust.
Designing a Recipe Layout for Cookies
In this final project, I will further explain how to design a recipe layout for this particular Chocolate Chip Cookie. You will learn how to plan and sketch the layout, mix the color palette, and paint the main food object as well as the mini ingredients. This chapter will give you the fundamentals to apply to more recipe layouts in the future.
